It might have been a new venue, but the Rockhurst-Shawnee Mission East basketball game still delivered some of the same energy and excitement that has become synonymous with this rivalry. The seniors polished off a perfect 4-0 record against the Lancers during their high school careers, overcoming a first quarter deficit to win 56-51 on Jan. 30, 2026.
The rivalry was moved this year to Municipal Arena to accommodate a larger crowd, and both school communities showed up en masse. Roughly 6,000 people attended, more than three times as many as could have attended had the game been at East, as it would’ve been otherwise.
“The turnout exceeded my expectations,” senior forward Hueston Saunders said. “I was worried about it being too big of a venue and not being able to hear the crowd. I was happily mistaken.”
The Hawklet faithful came in feeling confident in their squad. Rockhurst entered the matchup with a perfect 18-0 record and a No. 1 ranking in multiple polls in Missouri Class 6. Meanwhile, East was just 6-5. But the old adage about throwing out the records in a rivalry game rang true in this edition of the State Line Showdown.
The Lancers came out strong, staking themselves to a 16-8 lead early in the first quarter. While the Hawklets might not have anticipated that, they didn’t get rattled.
“I wasn’t worried at all,” Saunders said. “There’s nothing more meaningless than the score of a game after the first quarter. There was still so much game left to be played, and we needed to stay composed.”
That they did, as they erased the deficit to end the first frame tied at 17 apiece.
Rockhurst started the second quarter on an 8-0 scoring run. East’s defense stiffened from there, as they scored five unanswered points to make it 25-22 at halftime.
The action picked up substantially in the third quarter. Both teams displayed good shot-making ability as they consistently traded buckets. A put-back by junior Kemper Roberts at the end-of-quarter buzzer kept Rockhurst’s lead at three points, 42-39.

The teams stayed neck-and-neck throughout the fourth quarter. It wasn’t until there was just 1:05 left to play, with the Hawklets still holding a three-point lead, that East’s fate seemed to be sealed. The Lancers were forced to start fouling to try to extend the game. Rockhurst made them pay at the free throw line. With 13.7 seconds left on the clock, senior Cohen Robinson iced the game with a pair from the charity stripe, providing the winning 56-51 score.
Just six Hawklets scored in the game. Roberts led the way with 18 points, 6 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 block. Saunders backed that up with 14 points, 5 rebounds and 1 steal. Robinson added 10 points, and fellow senior Kevin Sullivan chipped in 9.
The victory carried Rockhurst faithful out of Municipal in good spirits. Some even started chants outside the arena.
By all indications, the change in venue proved to be a major success–providing a good experience for both fans and players.
“It was very exciting being able to play in an arena like Municipal Auditorium–not only because of the size, but because of the history as well,” Saunders said.
Inside the venue that’s hosted more NCAA final fours and regional finals than any other–yet hadn’t hosted a high school basketball game in 20 years–the Hawklets improved their record to a sterling 19-0, further enhancing the best start to a season in program history.
The road ahead doesn’t get easier, though. They next head east on Interstate 70 to Columbia, Mo. to take on perennial contender Rock Bridge. They also travel north later this month to play the No. 5 team in Nebraska Class A, Creighton Prep. Then, they’ll take on 16-6 Center on Senior Night the last week of the regular season.
Regardless of their opponent, though, the team plans to finish strong.
“You can expect tons of grit and focus as we enter the final stretch of our season,” Saunders said. “Going into the playoffs, we’ll only get better and better.”
