On the Cusp of Good-Bye

Seniors’ time here is winding down, which means reflection and goodbyes.

As the final quarter of the school year unfolds, Rockhurst high school’s Class of 2024 finds itself on the cusp of one of life’s big transitions: the journey from high school to life beyond. For many seniors, this last quarter is not merely a countdown to graduation, but a time for reflection, celebration, and preparation for the next chapter of their lives.

Throughout their four years at Rockhurst, the Class of 2024 has endured unique circumstances. They entered high school in the fall of 2020, forced to deal with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and everything it entailed, namely online classes. The already stressful introduction to high school made more so with the abnormal start to that chapter.

“It’s very surreal, and you start to realize all the changes and things you’ve overcome since you were a freshman–especially with us starting during COVID,” senior Layne Nato said.

As they approach the end of their high school journey, seniors are taking the time to reflect not only on how far they’ve come, but to reminisce about their fondest memories. From spirited pep rallies and intense sports competitions, to unforgettable performances and community service projects, the seniors soaked up many of the Rockhurst experiences.

“Service trips, Kairos, senior service, all of these experiences gave me amazing memories, and brought new friends along the way too,” senior Liam Lake said.

These experiences have not only shaped their individual identities, but also fostered a sense of camaraderie and unity.

Amidst the nostalgia and excitement for the future, seniors do face the bittersweet reality of saying goodbye to friends, teachers and a familiar routine, but the bonds forged and lessons learned will stay with them long after they leave the halls of Rockhurst.

“It’s definitely going to be tough leaving many of my friends behind, but we had countless amazing opportunities and experiences together,” senior Nicholas Haake said.

It’s a sentiment echoed by the teachers who have helped shepherd them through.

“We spend many months building relationships throughout the school year, so it is always difficult to part ways in May,” English teacher and coach Shawn Schmelzle said. “However, I am always grateful for the time we’ve shared.”

As they prepare to embark on the next chapter of their lives, seniors are also grappling with the uncertainty and challenges that lie ahead. From choosing a college and declaring a major, to navigating dorm life and forging new friendships, the end of their time at Rockhurst can feel like a lot…for all involved.

“Combined with the excitement and potential anxiety of moving on to college, that leads to April/May being a really interesting time of year to work with seniors,” math teacher Joe LeRoy said.

In the final quarter of their high school careers, seniors are not only focused on academic pursuits, but also on making lasting memories with friends and loved ones. From senior prom and graduation to senior pranks and farewell parties, these final months are filled with cherished moments and heartfelt goodbyes.

“There is a realization that a special time is coming to a close after prom and graduation,” Schmelzle said. “I get to witness students appreciating the bonds they have built together over four years. I am always moved.”

The final quarter of the school year is a time of reflection, celebration and preparation for the seniors of Rockhurst High School. As they bid farewell to high school and look ahead to college, many are filled with gratitude, excitement, and a sense of anticipation for the adventures that await them.

Sam LaSala, Staff Reporter
My name is Sam LaSala, and this year will be my first on the newspaper staff. In the past, I have always loved to write and talk to people for information that could be used on writing projects. I am extremely social, outgoing and creative. These attributes give me the confidence to say that I will be a great addition to the Rockhurst High School newspaper team. I want to write for the school newspaper, because I would love to be able to use my writing skills to my advantage to cover stories and other intriguing topics. Newspaper will not only be great for me now, but in the future as well. This subject can improve my writing skills now and give me more knowledge, and it will also look great on my resume for future schools and jobs. At the moment I am not involved in any clubs or extracurriculars at Rockhurst, but this sophomore year I plan to join a club and use it to my advantage as well. Getting involved in a club could get me more introduced to the school and other aspects as well--especially for the future. My goals for the future are to get above a 3.8 GPA and, possibly, even become a leader for various projects at the school. With these intentions in mind, I hope that they could boost my resume to get into as good a college as possible. As I progress in the newspaper this year I am enthusiastic to see what else it brings to the table.
